Do You Think Animals Should Work?
By Nora Young
"Saddle them up!" You can see a big man in front of a carriage with two horses getting tied to the front by a smaller, mud-stained man. Soon, two people board the carriage and the horses take off in a trot. About a half-hour later you see the horses again. This time the conductor is whipping the reins of the horses, who are dragging their feet, trying to avoid the reins. The two people get off the carriage and hand the conductor some cash. He smiles, turns around, ties the horses to a nearby pole, and walks away, waving the money to the big man you saw yelling. The man lets out a wicked smile, grabs the money, and walks away with the conductor at his heels. You see what I mean? There are some people who just want to use animals to get money and nothing more! In my opinion, if animals are being treated fairly, they should be able to work. Do you think animals should be able to work? Because I think if animals aren't being treated fairly they shouldn't have to work. My opinion just depends on the condition of the work they are doing.Animals can have many talents that humans don't. Some of these skills you can find in your average house-hold pet! Whatever it is, animals have their own skills fitted just for them! Some of these skills humans take advantage of unfairly, but not always. Have you ever seen a police officer with a dog? The first time I saw one of these I thought it was just for fun, but these dogs do more than you can think of! Some dogs that work for police officers sniff out bombs, weapons, and even lost people! These dogs go through hard training, that some humans can't complete! When they finish the training they have lots of skills that can help military forces! Some dogs sniff out IEDs, which are bombs planted in the ground to go off after someone drives or steps on them. These bombs can harm or kill tons of people. Other dogs can help disabled people live their lives without the stress! These dogs can alert their owners if something is wrong, where to go, and sometimes they can help those with stress issues. These are called emotional support animals. Dogs aren't the only animals that can help the disabled though. Capuchin monkeys can help disabled owners reach things that they normally can't, and can do other tasks around the house. Animals can help us in so many ways! But, even though animals have useful skills and fluffy fur, we can't always make them work for us. Sometimes animals have to go do unfair and cruel work. Animals can get injured working in certain conditions, like if it's hot out they can get overheated. This isn't fair! Some places and people consider animals 'equipment', or 'technology'. Plus, animals can get depressed, stressed, or even angry in traumatic events! Animals don't get to make a choice. They are sent to work without being able to decline. Carriage horses are exposed to stressful things while working, some of the stress coming from just the loud noises! Plus, carriage horses don't get to graze at pastures. They only get a 5-week for the whole year! This is why I don't think animals have to work. So, as you see the poor carriage horses trotting away, you get a feeling of guilt. Your letting them do this. I don't think animals should work if they are not being treated fairly. It's not fair for them and they get pushed around too much. This is why I don't think animals have to work. Thanks for reading!

The Sahara Desert
By Nora Young
Heat beats down on you. You drag your feet, wishing for water. Where are you? You're in the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world!3,000 miles from east to west, and 800-1,200 miles from north to south, the Sahara Desert is massive! With a heat reaching up to be 47 °C sometimes, traveling across the Sahara is no easy task unless you have a ride. But what can you ride in the desert? Camels!Camels are native to the Sahara Desert, and eat Cymbopogon schoenanthus, otherwise known as 'Camel Grass'. Camels will eat shrubs and grasses of all kinds, even if they have thorns. Camels have a special upper lip that helps them eats the foods of the desert. Camels are about 6.1 feet going from hove to shoulder. Did you know that camels can go up to 17 days without drinking? Camels can also close their nostril when there's a sandstorm; this helps keep out sand. But, wait. Camels aren't the only cool animals that live in the Sahara. The Fennec fox is an adorable little mammal that has fur that keeps the cold out during the night, and the heat out during the day. The Fennec fox is about 7.9 inches tall for the adult size and weighs about 2-3.5 pounds, but some say it can weigh more. The Fennec fox is often found in small dunes and treeless areas with shrubs and grass. These dunes come in handy during the day, when the Fennec fox digs down into them, creating a den that can be up to 3 feet deep. When the Fennec fox does this, it creates a cool area that the fox uses to escape the scorching heat. Usually there are other foxes nearby in their dens, sometimes their so close to each other their dens are connected! There will most likely be 10 foxes in a group, but sometimes there are less. What do you call a group of Fennec foxes? You can call a group of Fennec foxes: a skulk, a

leash, or an earth. Fennec foxes mainly eat:
Insects, such as Grasshoppers, Scorpions, and Beetles.
Small Mammals, such as small Birds, Rodents, and Lizards.
Plants, such as Fruits, Leaves, and even Succulents. Despite the large numbers they live in, Fennec foxes hunt solo in the night. Using their keen hearing to track down and hunt prey, Fennec foxes have, (on unusual occasions) taken down rabbits larger than themselves! Why should we save the Sahara Desert?1. Many different animals and plants reside in the Sahara desert. Lots of those animals may go extinct if we don't do something, so protecting the Sahara and the animals in it is essential.2. The Sahara Desert has many famous landmarks, such as: Aït Benhaddou, Hassan II Mosque, and Kasbah Amridil. These landmarks are historical and great places to visit to learn more about the past of the Sahara Desert.3. The sand that comes from the Sahara Desert can actually act as a fertilizer, and in some special conditions, can improve air quality! How can we save the Sahara Desert?Try to help stop global warming. I know this might sound really big, but it's actually pretty easy to help. Some ways you can help stop global warming could be small, simple things like turning off lights when you leave the room, or for example, when you're brushing your teeth, instead of leaving the sink on the whole time, turn it off when you're not using it. Do this with lights too. After awhile, you might want to try to use less and less, and that's a good goal. However, if you're using lights or water for pets, always, always, always do what your pets need. I know that Bearded Dragons need a heat lamp to be on all day. Always do what you need to do for your pet. You're still helping an animal.
You can also try to plant more trees and plants. This is a simple, effective way to help save the Sahara Desert. The trees will help stop soil erosion by holding the soil together. These are just 2 of the many ways you can help save the Sahara Desert.Thank you for reading!

The Amazon Rainforest
By Nora Young
The Rainforest. Beautiful. Serene. A place of wonder and curiosities. So why do we cut it down? While you read this, about 2,400 trees in the Amazon Rainforest have already been cut down. The Amazon Rainforest is full of plants and animals, and has many medicines we need, such as:
Achiote- a prickly, bright red fruit that can be used as sunscreen and bug repellent! Not really a medicine, but very helpful. Can also be added to food to make it a yellow/orange-ish and give it a nutty hint.
Sanipanga- leaves that can act as a purple dye and help kill germs.
Matico- a plant with bright orange, round flowers and green leaves. When the leaves are boiled, they can help with inflammation, soreness, choughs, relieve muscle pain, sore throats, and other common sicknesses. This is just a small, small amount of the medicinal plants that come from the Amazon Rainforest. What else comes from the Amazon Rainforest?
Lots of foods come from the Amazon Rainforest, too. This one is a fan-favorite, tastes sweet, and is sold throughout the world! You guessed it! I'm talkin' about chocolate!
Chocolate comes from Cacao beans, which has to go through a series of steps to become one of our favorite treats! The steps to make chocolate are pretty long, (and most of them require machinery,) but I'll give you the first two steps to make chocolate.

This is a Cacao Bean hanging off a Cacao tree branch.
Step:1- First, you have to gather some Cacao beans from a Cacao Tree. When you do this, check that the beans are okay, and nothing's wrong with them. Make sure to check the tree for disease too. If it does have a disease, then you can't use the beans. You can also buy beans from sellers. (Amazon and even Etsy sells them.) Then move on to step 2.Step:2- Fermentation. Find an enclosed space with 70–85°F (21–28°C) and 90-80% humidity, then put the beans into either a fermentation box, bucket, or container. Then, cover them with Banana Leaves or Plastic Wrap. Make sure to mix the beans twice a day to make sure they get evenly fermented. Make sure the temperatures are correct though out the fermentation step. Fermentation can take up to 2-7 days. Next, spread the beans onto a flat surface so they don't roll off. Turn the beans every now and then to make sure they dry evenly. Cook the beans in an oven at 248–302°F (120–150°C) for about half an hour. Then let the beans cool down before grinding them into a powder. The Amazon rainforest is also home to lots of animals too, so let's take a look at some of these animals and see why they're important.Poison Dart Frog- The Poison Dart Frog is a unique frog with the special gift of venom! The Poison Dart Frog has no defenses other than it's venomous skin. The Poison Dart Frog is brightly colored, and through its colors, tells it's opponent: I'm venomous; be careful.Capybara- The Capybara is the largest rodent on earth; that's right. Rodent! The Capybara is cousins with the guinea pig, and looks strongly like the guinea pig. The Capybara will resort to jumping into water to get away from predators, and can hold it's breath for up to 5 minuets.Green Anaconda- One of the largest snakes in the world, the Green Anaconda can grow to be up to 30 feet long and weigh over 550 pounds! It kills prey by strangling it until the prey has suffocated. The Amazon Rainforest is a vital part of the world, and we need it to survive! Some ways you can help:
Try to reduce using lots of water an electricity. If there is something you are not using, please turn it off. The factories that make electricity release lots of toxic fumes; they are the #1 reason for toxic air pollution! If you don't use as much electricity, factories will start to make less, (which is a good thing) which means there won't be as much toxic fumes currently coming from energy factories, which will result in the air being cleaner and fresher! You can also try different types of ways to get that electricity. Try solar panels! While they may be expensive at first, in the long-term they will help you save money and the environment! Lots of people use solar panels because:
1. Solar panels are popular.
2. Solar panels can help save on your energy bills.
3. When you use Solar panels, you have your own, independent energy source. This means you don't only rely on the power plants.
4. Solar panels are pretty sturdy, and can last up to 25 years, with little to no maintenance!
5. When you use solar panels, you're helping the environment. Thanks for reading!
